The Hidden Costs

Many Americans have become concerned about the quality of their tap water and have turned to bottled water as a solution. Studies have shown, however, that bottled water is not necessarily cleaner or safer than tap water, and that bottled water actually has fewer standards regulating it. In addition, the cost comparison of bottled water shows it to be no bargain:

Bottled Water Cost Comparison

Water Delivery Method Cost Per Gallon of Water Times More Expensive than Multi-Pure®
Multi-Pure® Drinking Water Systems $.08 per gal. N/A
Pitcher/Carafe $.20 per gal. 2.5X
Vending Machine Water $.25 per gal. 3X
Retail Bottled Water $.79 per gal. 10X
Home Delivered Bottled Water $1.74 per gal. 22X
Domestic Purified Bottled Water $2.23 per gal. 28X
Imported Bottled Water $3.84 per gal. 48X
Costs are averaged, based on several different brands.

The Other Problems with Bottled Water

Some of the problems with bottled water include:

  • The inconvenience of having to buy and carry water
  • The questionable and inconsistent quality of the water
  • The expense
  • The environmental effect of the manufacture and disposal of all those plastic bottles.

A third of the 103 bottled water brands tested in a four-year scientific study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) contained such contaminants in at least some samples, at levels that exceed state or industry standards. In fact, consider the following stunning assertion:

Chemicals typically used to disinfect water may react unpredictably with substances, adding their own potentially dangerous element as well.” says the March/April 2001 issue of emagazine:

“Microbes, pesticides, and solvents have been detected throughout groundwater supplies, and have subsequently found their way into bottles, regardless of disinfection"

The World Wide Fund for Nature commissioned a 26 page study called “Bottled” in which it reveals:

  • World bottled water market is estimated to be worth $22 billion.
  • Bottled water, although up to 1,000 times the price of tap water, may be no safer, or healthier than tap water.
  • More standards regulate tap water in Europe and the US than bottled water.
  • Every year 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water and toxic chemicals can be released during the manufacture and disposal of the bottles.

Multi-Pure® Drinking Water Systems are the perfect solution for people who purchase bottled water:

  • Multi-Pure® Drinking Water Systems make fresh, clean water convenient and readily available at your kitchen counter.
  • You can fill your own bottles with healthy Multi-Pure® water for pennies and take them with you wherever you go.
  • And, because you can fill and refill bottles, the amount of bottles disposed of will be greatly reduced.
  • No heavy bottles to lift or storage space needed.
